On Sunday, I chatted (via Skype) with Matt Cauthron who teaches digital imaging, media arts, and animation in the Digital Arts Technology Academy (DATA) at Cathedral City High School in Cathedral City , CA. While our conversation covered a host of topics, much of it centered around a new collaborative wiki space that Matt is starting up called The Student Creative.
The goal of the site is certainly a worthy one: To promote and share how creativity is taught in schools. It grew out of an annual digital-imaging project at DATA in which Matt challenges his students to respond to two questions: “What is your definition of creativity?” and “What is your goal in life?” From there, Matt and his students became curious about how other digital media teachers and students thought about creativity and how it was being taught in other schools. Hence the Student Creative was started as a way of sharing ideas about creativity and how it’s being taught in different locales.
I’ve already joined the site and encourage digital arts teachers to do the same. There’s already a nice collection of projects, or teacher and student challenges, videos, and links to related resources that I am sure will continue to grow.
