Why Does Man Create?

The great 20th-century comic character and sometimes philosopher, Calvin once pondered this perennial question only to conclude that it was just something to do when he’s bored.

Why do students create in your art classes? Is it simply to complete “the assignment,” or do they have some choice in the matter? Do they understand that people create art for many reasons other than self expression? Do you have discussions in class on the motivations that drive people to create?

One way I introduce this topic to students is to show “Why Man Creates,” the 1970 Oscar-winning film by Saul Bass. It’s available on DVD through Pyramid Media, for $125.00. Perhaps too costly for your school budget? If so, YouTube to the rescue! Here’s a five-minute preview of one of the best parts of the film.
